Both, Two Hinnies

The Two Hinnies, Rocca Aquatica near Ancona

Etching, 265 x 201 mm., from Four Upright Italian Landscapes, Hollstein 4 iii/vi, Wurzbach 4 iii/vi. Fine, sharp impression on laid paper, trimmed on the platemark but showing the full borderline; edges reinforced verso. Both was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and etcher who was born in Utrecht. Together with his brother Andreas, also an artist, he spent about eight years in Italy, returning to Utrecht afterwards (Andreas died in Italy on the way home). He continued his work there, but it is views of Italy that dominate his life’s work. His output as an etcher is small, but the ten etchings of Italian landscape he did are among the most charming of all the many Dutch efforts to memorialize, in black and white, the beauty of that country.
