Veduta del Ponte, e del Mausoleo, Fabbricata da Elio Adriano

Etching, from Antichitá di Roma, Vol. IV, Plate IV, 400 x 628 mm., Focillon 339, Wilton-Ely 472. Very fine impression on laid paper with full margins, the center fold reinforced. The print is actually a full view, from the opposite bank of the Tiber, of the Castel Sant’Angelo, originally Hadrian’s tomb, and the bridge leading to it. There is another view of the Castello in the Vedute di Roma, but this is a far more compelling image, closer up and more detailed, and the fishermen on the river make a marvelous foil to the winged statues on the bridge and that of St. Michael atop the structure. While not as well known as many of the Piranesis in the Vedute, this is a great image worthy to stand next to the best of his Roman evocations.
