Une Matinée d’Hiver

Une Matinée d’Hiver au Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu (Winter Afternoon on the Quay of the Charity Hospital;

Etching, with drypoint and roulette, 1876, 238 x 322 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 123 iv/xv, from L'Art. Fine impression on laid paper with small margins, from the published edition with the letterpress. This was the plate that made Buhot's reputation in the English-speaking world and alerted collectors of etchings to the existence of a new master printmaker. Again, it is the element of weather that permeates the scene. Critics and connoisseurs saw here a different kind of print, expressing a new and different artistic personality, from anything by Whistler, Meryon or Haden, whose etchings had dominated the field.
