Oak Trees in a Landscape

Drawing in pen and brown ink on brownish wove paper, 121 x 162 mm., some light staining. This is a drawing that would have been made by Théodore Rousseau if he had been a German instead of a Frenchman. It is a portrait of two old, gnarled oak trees in their setting, and Rousseau knew probably every major tree in Fontainebleau Forest as he would an old friend. But the facture here is different, too careful, too precise in the minor details, in short, too finicky for Rousseau. It nevertheless is a beautiful drawing of we- don’t-know-where and done most probably by a German artist and quite possibly (on the basis of comparison with others) by Preller. But the attribution is anything but certain.
