Les Travaux des Champs (5 scenes) (Agricultural Work)

Wood engravings, 1852, (images) 135 x 76 mm., Baas & Fields: The Artistic Revival of the Woodcut in France p. 32, B. N. Inv. N.D., Béraldi N.D. A full page, with text recto and verso, from the issue of Feb. 7, 1853 of the journal L'Illustration, containing five images (of ten) from the set Les Travaux des Champs, fine impressions on wove paper with margins. The engravings were later (1855) printed on chine and issued in a portfolio. Millet's drawings for the set date from 1852. The images here are La Tondeuse de Moutons (The Sheep Shearer), Le Faiseur de Fagots (The Twig Cutter), L'arracheuse de Lin (The Flax Harvester), La Broyeuse de Lin (The Flax Crusher), and La Fileuse (The Spinner). Each shows a single figure engaged in labor. Though not well known, this is an important group of Barbizon images.
