A Chorus of Singers

Etching and engraving, 1730, 173 x 162 mm., Paulson 127 iii/iii. A fine, dark impression on laid paper with good margins, probably from the Heath edition of ca. 1800 but possibly earlier. The work satirizes a rehearsal of the oratorio Judith by the composer William Defesch (ca. 1680-1758). Hogarth later, perhaps to atone for the print, provided Defesch with a serious frontispiece for the oratorio's publication. The image is one of Hogarth's most celebrated and often reproduced.
