La Rue du Pot-au-Lait (La Bièvre) (Milk Jug Street in the Bièvre River Section of Paris)

Etching, 1901, Lotz-Brissonneau 126 bis, No. 12, 255 x 168 mm. Fine impression on laid paper with small margins. L-B did not distinguish states of this print, but, from our research, this impression is of the fourth state of five. Lepère, was, if anything, even more interested in book illustration than Buhot, and his work in the field encompassed everything from.tiny pamphlets to major productions, including works by Huysmans and a spectacular edition of Erasmus’ In Praise of Folly. He did a series of four etchings and thirty-six wood engravings for J. K. Huysmans’ La Bièvre, Les Gobelins, Saint-Séverin in 1901, and then followed that with a separate suite of twelve etchings to be added to the volume. This print is from that latter set and is one of those images of the little joys of life even in one of the poorer sections of Paris.
