Une Matinée d’Hiver

Une Matinée d’Hiver au Quai de l’Hôtel-Dieu (Winter Afternoon on the Quay of the Charity Hospital;

Etching, with drypoint and roulette, 1876, 235 x 317 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 123 vi/xv. A very fine impression of a state after publication usually described as "worn," but here clearly not. The plate has had some rework, the inking is darker and more idiosyncratic than the published state, and the overall effect is atmospheric and satisfying. A working proof, it is printed on laid paper with good margins. Comparison with the preceding number shows the differences between a printer's impression, however good, and an artist's impression. You may prefer one or the other, but they are different.
