Baron van Isendoorn à Blois (Lugt 2610, 1407); C.J.F.J. Maasen (L. 1774b). As opposed to his painted portraits, Rembrandt’s etched portraits were almost never the result of commissions. They were informal, deeply penetrating, personal studies of people well known to him: family, friends, colleagues. Sylvius was the guardian of Rembrandt’s wife Saskia. Superb impression on laid paper with an indecipherable fragment of a watermark, with margins of 10 mm. outside the platemark all around and no flaws apart from a tiny paper inclusion at the lower right.
