Zierikzee

Drypoint, 1924, 190 x 400 mm., Osborne (P.C.Q.) 81. Superb impression in brown-black, with burr and varied plate tone, on wove paper with good margins, signed in pencil from the edition of 65. Although Osborne studied with Frank Short and succeeded him, upon his retirement, as head of Etching and Engraving at the Royal College of Art, his prints declare him to be one of the finest followers of Muirhead Bone. There is every effort here to use the full range of drypoint, from the most delicate, whispy scratches to the full-burr treatment in the deep shadows and distant trees. What cannot be conveyed in drypoint is done through the wiping of ink on the plate. Zierikzee, almost needless to say, is in Holland.
