Vanitas
Original drawing in gouache on heavy, textured wove paper; old creases and edge tears, but no losses, 344 x 248 mm. This startling and bizarre image appears to come straight out of the Middle Ages and the odd paper it is painted on defies identification as an artistic support, leaving one only to guess at its origin. That it is meant as a sort of Vanitas image is clear (it would not do as a dressing room decoration), and the oak leaves, symbols of strength, together with the winged cherub, seem to point to a message of endurance and faith in the face of death. But this is supposition. Although well done, there is a sort of primitivism about it, leading one to the thought that its origin, wherever it may have been, was some place far from the usual centers of artistic activity.
