Frederick Augustus, Duke of York

Mezzotint, after 1816, 480 x 382 mm., Chaloner Smith N.D. Very fine proof before letters on laid paper with small margins; the paper lightly toned and a few very small edge tears repaired. As the lower plate margin is completely blank, there is no signature or title. The print is after Lawrence’s full-length portrait of 1816, which is in the Royal collection, with changes in the decorations and, of course, reduction to a 2/3 length. Frederick Augustus (1763-1827) was the second son of King George III and heir presumptive, until his death, to his older brother, George IV. Though many portraits of him exist, Lawrence’s is clearly outstanding -- and so is this mezzotint rendering of it. The print is glaringly lacking in the collections of both the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. It would be a blessing if someone could buy it and donate it to one or the other.
