Celebration Plate for the 200th Anniversary of the Augsburg Confession

Etching and engraving, 1730, 427 x 330 mm., ex collection: unidentified shield with town gate (not in Lugt). Very fine impression on laid paper with narrow margins on three sides, trimmed just outside the subject at the left and a narrow false margin added with the borderline partly drawn in. The Augsburg Confession, the chief Lutheran creed, was prepared by Melancthon and read before the diet of Augsburg in 1530. This incredibly complex commemorative piece includes portraits of Luther and Melancthon, symbolic and historical vignettes, a four-voice setting of a Lutheran chorale and detailed depictions of a host of musical instruments. There is another, less interesting engraving verso, as the sheet must have come from an unidentified large book.
