Horses Going to a Fair

Lithograph, 1821, 272 x 355 mm., from Série Anglaise, Delteil 32 ii/ii, Rouen catalog 37. Fine, clear and undamaged impression on wove paper watermarked 1820, with margins of about 20 mm. and the full text below. Although it is catalogued as the second state, Delteil records no impression of the first (before the crack in the stone). Gericault, an avid horseman himself and a student of sporting art under Vernet, was both a master of the depiction of horses and a master of the technique of lithography. The combination led to a series of superb prints of equine subjects, many of them duplicated in later life with the assistance of other artists but lacking the flair and genius of the originals. This is one of the originals, a superb rendering of not only the anatomy of horses but of their spirits and the differences among them.
