Le Grand Parc à Moutons, le Matin

Etching, 1860, 218 x 376 mm., Delteil 95 iii/iv. Fine impression, before the erasure of the address of Cadart & Chevalier, on laid paper with narrow margins; the paper warmly and evenly toned and tiny losses at the upper margin corners far from the image. This is a far more sophisticated print than either of the Jacques above. Daubigny plays with light here, effectively using the white wool of the sheep as an area of reflected light against the dark ground and shaded sky. The source of the light, of course, is the morning sun coming in from the left but not specifically shown. One of the early masterpieces of the Etching Revival.
