Buhot, Une Matinée d’Automne

Une Matinée d’Automne ou Le Chasseur Matinale (An Autumn Morning or The Morning Huntsman)

Etching, drypoint and aquatint, ca. 1878, B/G 71 ii/v, 109 x 168 mm. Superb, early impression, before the inscription at the lower right, on chine volant with full margins. There were 35 impressions taken in all and many of the later ones show considerable weakening in the image and a lack of contrast and detail. It is not what one would consider a typical Buhot subject (nor a typical execution of it, either), but obviously the image haunted the artist’s memory, for a dozen years later he returned to it in a different medium (see the next entry). Oddly, there seem to be no extant paintings or drawings of the subject. Rare in this quality.
