The Mooring Stone, Polperro Harbour

Etching, 1888, 153 x 260 mm., Hardie 222. Fine impression with considerable plate tone on laid paper with small margins, signed in pencil. Polperro, on the south coast of Cornwall, is today a quaint tourist attraction, an old fishing (and smuggling) village with no cars and a lovely setting. Back when Short did this etching, though, it was a place the depended upon fishing for its very existence. The chains here are fastened to the great stone, a sure and economical way of holding boats in place at high tide, and Short’s etching, far from prettifying the scene, gives us its essential grittiness.
