Three Sketches of a Seated Woman

Brown ink and touches of wash over pencil, 199 x 155 mm. Fluent and well-done sketches by "the poor man's Delacroix," probably a sheet from one of his North African sketchbooks, on brownish wove paper, irregularly torn at the left, a small loss at the bottom of the sheet and a few oil stains along the right edge. Dehodencq was a pupil of Léon Cogniet and traveled extensively in Spain and Algeria. He was elected a chevalier of the Légion d’honneur in 1870. Forgotten after his death, he was rediscovered later and his paintings and drawings are today widely collected.
