ROME: Montagu, Veduta di Piazza di Montecavallo (Quirinale)

Veduta di Piazza di Montecavallo (Quirinale), Rome

Etching, 395 x 535 mm. Fine impression on laid paper with the watermark of a fleur-de-lis in a single circle with the letter V, with large margins; the usual vertical centerfold. The view is actually of the Piazza del Quirinale and, like Piranesi's view (Hind 103) shows the statues of the Horse-Tamers almost from the back, although the angle is slightly different, and Montagu's is a more detailed view of the Palazzo della Consulta at the right. Little seems to be known about Montagu except that he was obviously a very competent etcher, that he worked in Rome and that he published at least one album of Roman views, from which this plate presumably comes. It was published by Bouchard, who also published early editions of Piranesi's etchings.
