The Towers (San Gimignano)

Etching, 1909, 255 x 110 mm., Bruette 141, Library of Congress 287. Fine, atmospheric impression on laid paper, trimmed close to the platemark by the artist and signed in pencil at the bottom. MacLaughlan was one of the earlier Americans (actually, he was born in Canada) to take off to Europe and not only see the sights, but etch them. Although he was clearly influenced by Whistler, he did not try to imitate him. His hundreds of etchings, though somewhat uneven in quality, above all emit a sense of excitement at what he was seeing, a touristic appreciation of something dreamed of and now experienced -- and very, very hard to convey with a camera.
