MacLaughlan: St. Ouen, Rouen

St. Ouen, Rouen

Etching, 1903, 148 x 168 mm., Bruette 59 ii/ii. Canadian-born and American trained, MacLaughlan was one of our earlier expatriates, wandering around Europe in the nineties and the early years of the twentieth century, etching the scenes that a host of Americans would etch twenty and thirty years later. He had a fine style at the beginning, a broader one later on, and there are wonderful prints to be found among both groups. There is a lot of his material around and for now, at least, it's very inexpensive. A fine impression of this early, highly-detailed print on old laid paper with small margins, signed in pencil. The view shows the apse and courtyard of the 14th-century abbey cathedral where Joan of Arc was sentenced to death in 1431.
