Other Images:

Etching, 1651, from the Set of Horses, 142 x 190 mm., Bartsch 3 ii/ii, Dutuit 3 iii/iv(?). A good impression on laid paper, trimmed on or outside the borderline. Stoop’s etchings, along with many other prints by Dutch 17th-century artists, were quite popular in Paris in the 18th and 19th centuries, which accounts for the provenance.

Provenance:
Naudet (Lugt 1937 & 1938). Naudet, and perhaps there were several members of the family, was a print seller in Paris in the eighteenth century and wrote his name and date on many fine prints that passed through his hands. This was probably less out of egotism than as a form of guarantee of authenticity. It is still something of a pleasure to see, in brown ink on the back of the print, a fine 18th-century scrawl saying, as it does here: “Naudet, M. D’estampes au Louvre, 1789.”
