Brawl in a Tavern

Pen and brown ink over pencil with touches of brown and grey wash, 167 x 240 mm., signed at the lower right. Fine, detailed sketch, probably preliminary to a painting, on wove paper. Verso, two smaller tavern scenes and four small sketches of a mouse. Dansaert, needless to say, was a genre painter, a student of Edouard Frère. His works are to be found in museums in Belgium, France and England. An oil of this subject (not known if after this design) was sold at the Ledeboer sale in Paris in 1891.
