Pencil and pen and brown ink on laid paper, 213 x 134 mm., with the estate stamp verso. One study is vertical, the other horizontal; torn from a sketchbook, the sheet has small tears at three edges, one reinforced with tape verso. Chapu was an important French nineteenth-century sculptor, a student of Pradier and Duret, winner of the Prix de Rome, medalist many times over. His works are in various public buildings and churches in France. The statue for which this is one of the preliminary drawings is in the Musée Bonnat in Bayonne.
