Le Port aux Mouettes (The Port of Seagulls)

Etching, drypoint, aquatint and sandpaper ground, 1886, B/G 162 vi/vii, 245 x 357 mm. Very fine impression in slightly-greenish black ink on laid paper with full margins, the verso bearing the Buhot family triangular stamp. The view is of the harbor of Saint Malo, on the other side of the Rance estuary from the town of Dinard, where Buhot, after he left Paris, established a home. It is very integrated print, the symphonic margins focusing on the same elements as the major subject: sailing ships, gulls and oysters and shrimp on which the gulls are feeding. It is also a very subtle one, the images appearing from varied tones of grey with no areas of bright light.
