Dujardin, Man and Two Donkeys

Man and Two Donkeys by a Stream

Etching ,1660, 142 x 181 mm., Bartsch 19 ii/ii. A rich, black impression, with the number and therefore an eighteenth-century printing, on laid paper with good margins. Dujardin (or du Jardin) was born in Amsterdam and was something of a world traveler, not only working for some years in Italy, but reaching North Africa. A well-known painter of Italianate landscapes, as an etcher he did both landscapes and animal subjects as well as the occasional genre piece and a single portrait. He died in Venice, preferring to remain in Italy, “where I want to be,” rather than return to Amsterdam. His etchings, though Dutch in style, are almost all of Italian subjects.
