Arnoud van Beresteyn
Engraving, 1579, 43 x 31 mm., Bartsch 192, Hirschmann 175, Strauss 114. Provenance: St. John Dent (Lugt 2373).
A very fine impression of this tiny oval plate, on laid paper trimmed just outside the
borderline; a tiny stain in the text area. Unlike some of Goltzius' other miniature portraits, the text in this one prints forward, indicating that the plate was made specifically to be printed and not as an art object in itself. Berestyn (1556-1612) was
an art connoisseur and owned drawings by Dürer as well as the original plate of Goltzius' "Pieta." He looks here older than the 23 the plate declares him to be. His French motto is engraved around the edges: "Tousjours ou Jamais" (Always or Never). The print
is quite rare; Strauss cites 7 impressions in public collections.
