Umarmung (Embrace)

Drypoint, 1922, Glaser 210, Gallwitz 206, Hofmaier 236 4Bd, 423 x 256 mm. Very fine impression with burr on white wove paper with full margins, pencil signed and numbered from the edition of 50. There was also an edition of 20 on japan, and unnumbered impressions on both japan and wove (Hofmaier says 30 and 50 respectively). It is, however, still unclear as to how many of these impressions, yet unsold, were destroyed in the bombing of Berlin in 1944. During the early Twenties, Beckmann produced some of his finest prints, including the Self Portrait in Bowler Hat, Group Portrait Eden Bar and the portfolios Jahrmarkt and Berliner Reise. Umarmung is far from the least of these.
