Lithotint with scraping, 1878, as published in Notes in an edition of 30, 173 x 263 mm., signed in pencil, Way 4, Levy 8-9, Spink/Chicago 7 ii/iii. Very fine impression of this rare lithotint, printed on off-white chine (or japan) appliqued to thick, white wove paper with large margins (sheet size 333 x 430 mm.), signed “Whistler” in pencil in the lower right margin. The Notes edition was 30 and Way records 35 impressions in all, presumably including a few proofs. The stone deteriorated after the edition and Spink records only 2 impressions of the third state, which attempted, unsuccessfully, to restore the balance of the image. The presence of a script signature here (as in the Chicago and Freer impressions) would imply that this impression was printed in 1878/79. A print of major importance in Whistler’s oeuvre.
