La Modiste

Woodcut, printed in colors, ca. 1900, 350 x 210 mm., edition 50. Provenance: Henri M. Petiet (Lugt 2021a). Fine impression on japan paper with full margins, signed in pencil and numbered from the edition of fifty. Little is known of Delcourt. His career was cut short by his death fighting for France in World War I. Woodcut and wood engraving were his primary media and he apparently did some book illustrations in addition to the relatively few single prints by which he is known today. According to Richard Field (The Artistic Revival of the Woodcut in France, 1850-1900), his colors were inked with gelatin rather than oil or water-based pigments, a technique used by hardly any of his contemporaries.
