Mount St. Gothard

Etching and mezzotint, 1920, 200 x 275 mm., Hardie 14 trial proof d. Very fine, rich proof impression in brown on laid paper with good margins, signed in pencil, annotated “trial proof, two taken. 9.12.20,” “d,” and “4-1. sky re-rocked,” and additionally initialed at the corner of the sheet. The subject had been engraved by Charles Turner at the painter’s request, and Short had come across a proof impression that had been annotated by J. M. W. Turner with instructions to the engraver. Short felt that those instructions had never really been carried out and so his plate was an attempt to do so. He took exceptional care in the process, his own plate going through fourteen trial proofs before the published state was reached. As an early proof, this impression shows every subtle gradation of tone with exceptional clarity.
