Petite Marine, Souvenir de Medway (Little Seascape, a Remembrance of the Medway)

Etching, drypoint and false biting, 1879, B/G 153 iii/vi, 160 x 21`5 mm. Very fine impression of this rare early state, before aquatint, but with some varied plate tone, on laid paper with large margins; slight paper toning in the area of the old mat opening. In this state (and the previous one) the sky is covered with a myriad of cross hatchings and light breaks through the clouds to be reflected on the water. In the distance are two tiny figures, one with an umbrella, afterwards replaced by a windmill. The plate is inscribed “Rochester, 1879,” the same location as the Vieux Chantier (B/G 147).
