The Brook

Wood engraving, 1829, Lister 12c (iii/iii), 50 x 88 mm.; according to a note, from the collection of G. H. Warrington (not in Lugt). A fine impression on thick, tan wove paper with good margins, as published in A Memoir of Edward Calvert by His Third Son, in an edition of 350; a few dots in the margins. Calvert made only eleven prints in his life, all miniatures, all done before 1832, but they are among the glories of English print making. Visionary, pastoral works, they were inspired by William Blake, and Calvert was a member of the Blake-influenced group called “The Ancients,” which met at Samuel Palmer’s home at Shoreham, Kent. All Calvert’s prints are rare today, no matter which edition.
