Manfred and Astarte, 2nd plate

Lithograph, 1881, 283 x 301 mm., Hédiard 34 ii/ii, ex collections: T. G. Arthur, according to a marginal note (Lugt 129); Edward Miller (not in L.). Very fine impression on chine-appliqué with large margins, pencil signed and from the edition of 25 (plus 6 or 7 trial proofs). The image is an evocation of Robert Schumann’s Manfred, Op. 115, the incidental music for Byron’s play of that name, of which we rarely hear anything but the overture, perhaps because the play was never written to be staged. As a painter, Fantin excelled in pictures of flowers, but in lithography he was persistently drawn to evocations of music and musicians: Wagner, Berlioz, Schumann, Rossini.
