The Family
Etching, ca. 1650, 37 x 34 mm., Bartsch 21, Dutuit 21 ii/ii, Hollstein 21 ii/iii, ex collections: F. Gawet (Lugt 1005), Carl Thiemann (L. 642c), Victor Sieger (L. 2367), J. F. Marsh (?) (L. 1455). Fine impression on laid paper with inky plate edges and small margins. An exceedingly rare print, it was not included in the later collected edition of Bega’s etched works. No impression has been at auction in the last twenty years and we have found only a single one in a dealer catalog (1984). Bega, who worked in Haarlem, was a student of Adriaen van Ostade and an important “Golden Age” painter, draughtsman and print maker.
