Les Joueurs de Tric-Trac

Etching, 1868, Béraldi 3, Sanchez & Seydoux 1868-13, 155 x 177 mm. Fine impression on laid paper with small margins, as published by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts; the paper slightly darkened. Roybet was an admired painter of historical genre scenes – when historical genre scenes were admired. As an etcher, he basically translated his paintings into a different technique, skillfully enough, but without the feeling that he had added (or subtracted) anything in the process. No Manet, he. The subject is appealing, though, tric-trac being the French name for backgammon.
