Fruit in a Bowl by a Decorated Vase

Color woodcut, printed in water-based inks, ca. 1925, 273 x 375 mm. Fine impression on japan with good margins and signed in pencil; a small stain in the lower margin and light foxing verso. Urushibara was a Japanese working in London and using traditional Japanese cutting and printing techniques combined with a Western approach to composition. He did considerable work with Frank Brangwyn, translating the latter’s watercolor drawings into dramatic color woodcuts employing many separate blocks. His own subject matter was generally more modest, like this simple but effective still-life. In many ways, his work is the obverse of Japonisme and well worth study.
