The Seven Deadly Sins

Wood engraving, 1966, 303 x 432 mm. A fine artist’s proof, apart from the edition of 75, on simili-japon paper with very large, full margins, titled and signed in red pencil and inscribed “artist’s proof” in ink. Eichenberg was born in Cologne Germany, studied there and in Leipzig and began his career as a book and magazine illustrator in Berlin in 1923. In 1933, the rise of Hitler and Nazism forced him to flee Germany (he was both Jewish and politically outspoken) and, with his wife and children, he came to America and settled in New York City. Though his prolific output was primarily as a book illustrator (Dostoevsky, Poe, Erasmus, the Brontes, Swift) he was not afraid of large images. His style, once seen, is almost immediately recognizable, for, in his technique, white-shaded figures emerge from black backgrounds with often chilling dramatic effect.
