Eh, Eh ? Petit Gredin…

Lithograph, 1840, from Mœurs Conjugales (Married Life), 280 x 210 mm., Delteil and Daumier Register 649 iii/iv, Bibliothèque Nationale Inventaire 137-26. Fine impression, sur blanc with good margins. The series, by the still-to-be-married Daumier, was both popular and disturbing to the Parisian public, who tended to see the comedy and the problems as relating to the family next door, rather than their own. The text here, by the beleaguered father, reads as “Ho, ho? You little scamp, you’ve become a brat, you already have the eyes of a scoundrel. You’ll be just like your father.” Probably the greatest cartoonist in history, Daumier was also among its greatest draughtsmen.
