The Vision of St. Jerome

Engraving, 1540s, 359 x 249 mm., Bartsch 62, The Illustrated Bartsch 62 ii/iii. A good, but clearly posthumous impression, on laid paper with the watermark of a double circle and attached letter N (not in Briquet or Heawod), with very large margins; flattened horizontal center fold. The impression, while clear, lacks a range of tone and deep blacks and is probably 18th century. The image, with some variations, reproduces Parmigianino’s painting of 1526-27, now in the National Gallery of London.
