Farmlands
Lithograph, ca. 1935, 270 x 362 mm., provenance: the artist’s estate. Fine impression on an irregularly torn sheet of brownish wove paper; minor tape stains in the top corners away from the image and pale water stains at the bottom.
No one sees farm country like a city boy and Torre-Bueno, though of Spanish descent, was born and raised in New York City. Though there are slopes to the land, the overall impression is one of modified flatness extending as far as the eye can see. It is a lateral world in this view, whether the planes are grain fields, low trees, fences, land or water. And perhaps only an urban mentality would enclose in the view, at the top left, a fragment of highway – the way out.
