Le Poteau

Etching, ca. 1764, from Les Soirées de Rome, 132 x 87 mm., Baudicour 9 ii/ii or only state. A good, delicately printed impression on laid paper trimmed on or just inside the borderline; a small piece of the upper right corner replaced with blank paper. Robert made few prints himself, many of the most famous images being by others after his drawings. The Soirées de Rome though, are notable among eighteenth-century prints for the absence of idealization and the straightforward presentation of less magnificent scenes in and around Rome. Here, despite the ruins in the background, the subject is really the lamppost, a rather recent innovation, and the two figures who meet beneath it are clearly of their time.
