Shepherd with His Flock at Sunset

Original watercolor, 1862, 233 x 365 mm., on wove paper laid down to board, signed and dated; the paper tone darkened. Watercolor was an immensely popular medium in Britain and its practitioners, across the centuries, included some of the greatest British artists: Sandby, Gainsborough, Bonington, Turner, Cox, Girtin, Constable and Whistler. Leitch, a Scot, was not in that class, but he had considerable ability and achieved notable success. He was Vice President of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and was drawing master to Queen Victoria for over twenty years. He began, like a number of British artists, as a painter of theater scenery, but soon restricted himself to watercolor, supporting himself by teaching. Though he traveled on the continent, many of his works (like this one) portray England or his native Scotland.
