The Backgammon Players

Mezzotint, 271 x 197 mm., Wessely 192, Hollstein 192 only state. Fine impression on laid paper trimmed on the platemark but with the full plate margin and text below; creases flattened. Gole was a student of Dusart and his mezzotints are very much in the Dusart style, based on paintings and drawings by those Netherlandish artists who delighted in genre scenes. Backgammon or tric-trac was a popular amusement among all classes and a popular subject for representation, which gave considerable insight into the clothing and house interiors of the time. An uncommon print, only one other impression has been found at auction in the last twenty or so years.
