La Chapelle St. Michel à l'Estre

La Chapelle St. Michel à l'Estre (St. Michael's Chapel at l'Estre)

Etching, drypoint and roulette, 1881, 139 x 273 mm., Bourcard/Goodfriend 152 iv/v. Provenance: Roger-Marx (Lugt 2229), R.W.P. de Vries (L. 2786a). A very fine impression with plate tone on beautiful pale blue laid paper with large margins, the red owl stamp in the lower margin center. Pencil notations by Buhot in the right margin and a pale (or partially erased) inscription "3e État avant...." The construction of the print, in alternating stripes of light and shade, and the manipulation of three-dimensional space by the row of trees is quite extraordinary. The chapel still exists. Beyond it, in the print, is a bit of the northern edge of what much later came to be known as "Utah Beach."
