Doré, Lapplander Peasants

Paysans Lapons Poursuivis par des Loups (Lapplander Peasants Pursued by Wolves)

Lithograph, 1856-7, from Series of Large Lithographs, 258 x 360 mm., Béraldi 73, Bibliothèque Nationale Inventaire 206, No. 9. Fine impression on white wove paper with good margins. Doré, of course, is most famous for his book illustrations (Paradise Lost, Don Quixote, etc.), but those were all wood engravings done after his designs by others. He is today somewhat less famous than he once was as a painter. He also made original lithographs and they show clearly his remarkable abilities as a draughtsman as well as a wide variety of subject matter.
