The Five Senses (complete set)

Other Images:

Mezzotints, 1680-1715, each ca. 129 x 97mm. Pickaert was born in Amsterdam and died in St. Petersburg, Russia, so he was one of those peripatetic Dutch artists who, instead of going south to Italy, as so many did, went east and west to Russia and to England. Most of his work was in engraving and etching and his few mezzotints have a slightly primitive quality about them, as if he were not quite comfortable in the medium. Nevertheless, his Five Senses have a nice quirkiness, his Hearing showing a man turning to listen and knocking over his liquor glass in the process, his Smell directed to the smoke of the drinker’s pipe, and so on. Good impressions on thin laid paper with very large margins; soft creases from irregular drying or binding. The British Museum does not own a set.
