Christus und Judas
Woodcut, 1918, 393 x 498 mm., Schapire 218 from Kurt Woff Verlag Mappe, edition 75. A very fine, fresh impression on laid van Gelder paper with full margins, signed in pencil, from the edition of 75 printed by W. Drugulin, Leipzig and published by Verlag Kurt Wolff, Munich. The block was destroyed after the edition was printed. This is one of the artist's largest and most stunning woodcuts, showing, in the context of religious encounter, the strong influence of African art on the Expressionists in general and Schmitt-Rottluff in particular.
