Le Loup, View of the Town

View of the Town of Spa and the Promenade of 7 O’Clock

Original drawing in pen and black ink and wash on vellum, 1770, signed and dated in ink; a vertical center fold. The drawing is titled in French and with drawn borderlines in brown ink, with margins beyond. Spa is the town in Belgium that gives its name to medicinal springs throughout the world (and to heated hot tubs today). Le Loup was a native of the town and his artistic specialty was of drawings of views in and around Spa, some of which were later engraved. The original drawings, which are rarely found, have an eighteenth-century charm that exceeds their topographical representation, and invites one to visually enter a lost age.
