Pâques Fleuries (Palm Sunday)

Wood engraving, 1884, Lotz-Brissonneau p. 281, 270 x 218 mm. Fine impression on yellowish simili-japon with full margins, signed in the block by all four and signed in pencil by Lepère, as published in Bois du Monde, a deluxe publication of images that had previously appeared in the journal Le Monde Illustrée. It is an example of the cooperative nature of wood engraving as the design was made by Lepère and engraved by the three members of his studio, each doing separate blocks which were then assembled in a frame and printed as one. The sophistication of the technique is evident in that one can barely, if at all, see where the block divisions occur. The expertise of the engravers is evident in that one can see no difference in style or quality from one part of the image to another. Lepère trained them well.
